Once upon a time, I had a job with a company-owned cafeteria in the building. While I could still bring my lunch if I wanted, the cafeteria had some really great food at a really low price. As someone who prefers a real meal over a sandwich in most instances, I was a fan.
Now, however, it seems such places are a problem in San Francisco, where frankly everything can be a problem if it tries hard enough.
As the San Francisco Examiner reports: "Two city legislators on Tuesday are expected to announce legislation banning on-site workplace cafeterias in an effort to promote and support local restaurants."
Sponsored by Supervisor Ahsha Safai and Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the measure seeks to use the zoning laws to bar companies from having on-site cafeterias, because the economy or something.
(snip)
They want to push these people out of their workplaces with the idea that they'll then visit other restaurants in the city. The problem is, it'll push a lot of those employees to just bring their lunch or grab fast food. That's why the supply/demand graph looks the way it does. Part of the allure of on-site cafeterias is the cost and convenience. You can get a good meal just steps away from your desk.
If you take that away, they're not going to flock to sit-down restaurants in the city where there's going to be a rush, possibly a wait for seating, then a wait for food. Those are all things that take away that time from the workers. Instead, they'll grab fast food just to avoid being rushed.

What else couldn't these SF loons think up?
Sounds like a great opportunity for quality food trucks to partner with business
Yes, because people want to walk through turds and needles and step over dead bums to get to an overpriced lunch.
They arent eating where we want? I know, lets take away their freedom to eat where they want!
I for one would continue to bring my own lunch just to foil this stupid idea.
Would you be arrested for bringing your own lunch and eating it at your desk? What if most of the workforce did that?
The City needs the food and sales tax revenue. That's what it's all about.
these crazy liberals arent going to stop until citizens have no free will or choices.

Will the last business leaving california please turn off the light. Thank you.
They will have a business trash tax to limit brown bagging lunch. You will be forced to bring your trash home to dispose of it.
I find the notion of Facebook and Google employees having to dodge human feces and needles to grab a bite to eat oddly amusing.
San Fransicko restaurants tend to mostly be very very very very very very very over-priced
and even the good ones are suffering from lower patronage as tourists avoid visiting “the Shitty”
nobody wants to pay $400 for a motel room and then have to walk through sheet and pee and aggressive stinking beggars and street thugs, and drug needles on the streets, to then be gouged $150 for a dinner
People will have to put on their Muck Boots and leave the building ?

My daughters CA school already disallows lunch trash. Everything in reusable containers.
They should unplug it.
