It's an island. Real estate is limited explaining why housing costs so much.

Hawaii has long benefited from a strong military presence and tourist industry. This, like Europe, affords them the ability to run extensive social programs.

The climate is attractive to homeless as is Florida's.

There is also an underlying dislike of whites and the US as we colonized Hawaii.

If it weren't such a strategically located island in the Pacific it would be tempting to cut it loose....but we need it for that reason.

I’m 64. Hawaii has been expensive my whole life. I’ve been to every island except Maui and really enjoy the place. I’ve been to every state in the union except a few on the east coast. Considering the climate and beauty (and seafood), the big island is where I would retire if money was no object.

Honolulu repealed anti-vagrancy laws and the homeless population is everywhere

Why can't liberals recognize that killing off their valuable resources is no way to sustain a vibrant economy? You've got the entire Left Coast of the US...beautiful landscape, oceans, lots of natural resources--let's tax it to death and put a lot of burdensome regulations in place! Let's be lenient on illegal immigrants and crime, too.

Now, Hawaii...beautiful beaches, tourists come their in droves to see the majestic beauty. Hmmm...let's allow homeless to go anywhere they want, sleep anywhere they want, poop anywhere they want. That'll keep the tourists coming. Or, maybe not.

Used to live there. At that time you could airmail a box of cereal from the mainland cheaper than you buy it in the store. Five families controlled access to the islands and pretty much owned all the usable land. Read the book Hawaii. Its not too far off actual history. The natives got religion. The missionary’s got damn near everything else.

Other states pay to send their homeless populations to Hawaii.

If this is true, they need to shipped back where they came from pronto. Hawaii is a small state and can't afford out of state bums. They have enough of their own.

I was walking down to a marina and saw what I thought was a bunch of shipping containers.

It was low income housing.

Turns out bums and hippies like a nice climate with pretty scenery, too.

I've visited Hawaii twice. We spent a night there when our plane from Australia developed a mechanical problem which required us to stay overnight. The other time we spent about a week there.

I'm glad I've seen it but have never returned...and will never return.Florida and the Caribbean are nicer, closer and cheaper.

And given that I don't like macadamia nuts and that most pineapples seem to come from the Philippines the state won't see another penny of our money.
