When the original television series came out, (and its inverse "The Beverly Hillbillies") there was still a significant percentage of the population that could relate to the country/small town aspect of the show. The country vs city slicker concept goes all the way back to the roots of theater in America.
A Bing search indicates only 15% of the population is rural now. The last time it was split 50/50 that I could find was in 1920.
