Not quite. It's a big vein to be sure, but like all veins it is low pressure. The mistake here was to apply pressure in the form of towels wrapped around her neck, resulting in diffuse, ineffective pressure. A finger or two on or even in the wound would likely have saved her life. Few folks are up to that task, though

No, the problem was using towels, which just soak up blood.
Something hard was required, even a palm or fingers, depending on the size of the cut.
I stopped blood from a bombing with a rock and duct tape long enough to get a person to the hospital.
