Principal to parents: I’m only passing students because summer school too expensive
NY Post ^ | June 27, 2018 | Selim Algar and Ruth Brown

These middle-schoolers are getting moved up a grade — but their principal wants them to know they didn’t earn it.

A Brooklyn principal sent some parents a letter last week congratulating their sixth graders on being promoted — then implying the kids passed only because the school is too broke stick them in summer school.

This has got to be a new low, in a NYC system composed 99% of lows. Can you imagine passing kids because the school can't afford to stay open this summer for summer school? I never heard of this. Not every school stays open for summer school. Kids are sent to the nearest school which IS having a summer school program. 98% of the student body of this school receives free lunch; the students are from Yemen, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and China. Only 10% of this school's students were deemed proficient in math last year.

Yeah, let's bring in MORE illiterate non-academic mouths to feed who are failing in school and will not be able to support themselves on the menial jobs they will qualify for. Who wants to take a guess as to how many of these students are ILLEGALS?

Trying to be fair and reading between the lines. I think the message was to the effect. I’m going on a vacation and the little crap weasels were to dumb to learn anything anyway. 6 grade 5 grade what’s the difference? They are dumb little models of you ( the parents). Please remember to file your taxes on time. Airline fares aren’t cheap you know. Ahloha.

So those grade schoolers who can’t decide which gender they want to “identify” as are still being promoted? That’s crazy.

2014-15 New York spent $22,593 per student. That still is not enough, if they would only spend a little more things would be better.

#6: "Educational malpractice causes failing kids."

Probably true mostly. Then again, certain pools of students have lower IQs than others. I believe that the coursework is too complicated for many students, particularly in an "urban" context. Going back to very simple basics of just reading, writing, and arithmetic would go a very long way.

If you ever have seen a recent textbook, it looks like someone cut up several books, jumbled the pieces, and then pasted it all back together. It's not just elementary school. College level texts are horrible now. They are printed in multicolor, with side bars, text boxes, illustrations, parenthetical highlights, arrows, diagrams, and photographs. Truly dreadful.

If a student didn't have ADHD, he'd soon develop it with coursework like this. For students with low IQs and and a tendency to ADHD anyway, it is hopeless. It would be better for urban students to succeed in very simple tasks done well, than to struggle and fail at what is beyond their reach.

New Yorkers wanted this. Now they’re getting it.

Good and hard.

Sorry, I live in South Carolina where most Summer school is done online. I guess we’re backwards.

I agree. Blackboard and chalk - or, I suppose, whiteboard and black marker - paper and pencil.

I’m not understanding what summer school has to do with it. If they failed, let them repeat the grade.

school taxes are going to pay for the outrageous retirements of previous teachers and admins and funding the retirements of the present teachers and admins.

That’s my suggestion for failing urban school systems. Baltimore in particular.

Zero students tested to proficiency in math and science at several entire schools.

Get rid of everything but the absolute basics. Start over again with McGuffey’s readers.

Reading, writing, math and a bit of history.

I once heard that Baltimore schools start teaching history at the US Civil rights movement. History didn’t start in the 1950’s
