FORT HUACHUCA Community members and soldiers gathered at Brown Parade Field on Tuesday morning to welcome a new garrison commander, while saying goodbye to a beloved military family.
Col. Whit Wright passed the reins to Col. Chad Rambo after two years of service at Fort Huachuca. Although changes of command are part of the rhythm of life at the post, many were sad to see Wright, his wife, Kelly, and their two daughters pack up to head to Wrights next duty station in Fort Bragg, N.C.
The couple was very involved in the Sierra Vista community, said City Manager Chuck Potucek, who was one of many city officials and local law enforcement personnel who attended the ceremony.
Ive been through many changes of command, but Ive had a very good working relationship with Col. Wright, he said. He and his wife have done a lot for the community, but Im looking forward to working with Col. Rambo.
The garrison commander functions like the city manager of the post, running operations such as emergency services and utilities, as well as working closely with Sierra Vista representatives, said media relations officer Tanja Linton. Wright and and his wife went above and beyond in their efforts to serve the communities of Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista, said Vincent E. Grewatz, the director of Installation Management Command-Training.
Col. Wright distinguished himself by strengthening the enduring relationship between the fort and Sierra Vista, said Grewatz during his closing remarks, mentioning the recognition Wright had brought to Fort Huachuca for his wildfire management efforts and for spearheading an agreement with the city of Sierra Vista on ambulance support.
After Wright, Grewatz, incoming commander Rambo, and Sgt. Maj. Marcus Jones passed the garrison flag between them in a ceremony representing the transfer of responsibility.
Wright reflected on his time in Sierra Vista. He thanked his wife, a Tucson native whose work at the post included establishing the Hiring Our Heroes network for professional military spouses, and remarked on the strong leadership and progress he had seen both on and off the post.
However distinguished the history of Fort Huachuca, its best days are yet to come, I have no doubt, he said.
The incoming commander also spoke briefly about the hopes that he and his wife, Janie, had for Fort Huachuca.
Rambo has held multiple command positions during his nearly 30-year military career, and comes to Arizona following a stint at the National Defense University at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Were truly happy to be here, he said.
The ceremony concluded with a traditional cavalry charge from the Troop B mounted unit, which thundered down Brown Parade Field, firing pistols into the bright June sky, before riding back to Wright and presenting him with a saber.
Although it was natural for Fort Huachuca to feel some trepidation at the prospect of a new boss, said Linton, Wright assured onlookers that they could look forward to an excellent new garrison commander in Rambo.
You are the exact right command team at the exact right time for Fort Huachuca, he said to the Rambos. And I hope you find it just as endearing as Kelly and I have.
WHICH Rambo?? It makes a difference.
Seriously? Col. Chad Rambo? I guess you cant make it up.
Ironically not very far from Bowie AZ, the fictional birthplace of the John Rambo character.
