It’s a sad irony that deaths started rising when we started putting our tiniest children in the safest place – rear facing in the back seat.

And that, my friends, is the wages of the public-private child-seat nanny state.

Nanny State PING!

But I think in other instances people are just too stressed and harried these days.

Down here in south Virginia some guy would have kicked open the window before you got back. Pets, kids, any excuse.

They love doing it and most people encourage them.

Not saying it’s right, just how it is down here.

CAR WINDOW CONFISCATION

BAN car windows.

Register car window owners.

Background checks for car drivers.

Monthly inspections of car windows.

When my daughter was a baby, I used to take her to my mother-in-law’s before going to work for the day on a sporadic schedule. A few times while lost in thought about work or something else, I caught myself going the route to the office instead of my MIL’s.

I used to get a cold chill thinking about what if I had gone all the way to the office and just forgotten she was in the car. It never happened, but it made me realize it was probably close to happening on a few occasions.

"” I sorely doubt any of them were left intentionally” I do. What kind of idiot forgets they have a child in a car?? None. They simply didn’t want to take the child with them. Low IQ crowd."

Seriously? Do you really think this could not happen to you? Like the article said, people that think it could not happen to them are part of the problem. Even making this statement shows colossal ignorance on your part.

Years ago, I wrote on FR that the deaths were related to those backseat seats. I was absolutely torn apart by freeper parents! When I was young, children sat in the front seat (or were laid on the front seat) and the seatbelt was mom’s arm when she skidded to the red light.

You do not ever forget your kids.

I have 3 and I’d sooner forget my right arm than them. Have NEVER left them in the car. Not this day and age. Where I go, THEY go.
They are not an intrusion on me, they are my life.

There is a simple patentable solution to hot car child deaths.

That exactly nails my thoughts on this whole thing. I have to admit that a lot of freepers need to consider the phrase, “there, but for circumstance, go I.”

I know my brain is imperfect and, as you noted, accidents can happen, and sometimes severe ones. We have 330,000,000+ citizens in this country. I would not be surprised at all if a couple dozen kids and animals are accidently boiled alive in the car of attentive and loving parents who’s brain just got its wires crossed and the baby was silent in the back seat.

When I was a kid, there were no car seats and kids usually sat in front if there was one parent in the car - and they were rarely silently sleeping. There also were not many day cares, nor the need for them. i.e. this is sort of a post-modern-society problem.

“There is a simple patentable solution to hot car child deaths.”...........

If you leave a child to eventually die in a car so equipped, MAJOR punishment should be implemented.

complete horse poop. I hate when people suggest “leave something important like your phone” in the back seat so you’ll remember your baby. It’s your baby! I was a young mom and i never forgot my kids were in the car.

I could never understand how a parent could forget they left their baby in the car. It's not like they were transporting a book bag. Every time I put my kids in the car seat I always talked to them and checked my rear view mirror to see they were ok. I never just put them in the car and ignored them. That infant is the most important thing in the world to a parent. How can you forget it in the car?

Yeah, it kind of bothers me to think that someone might not be endangering his or her pet or child, but a window gets bashed in. And they want laws to pile on as well.

If a child were visibly sweating, that’s something else.

But here’s another one — sometimes ranchers get depressed and neglect their cattle. Then they go to prison, assets seized.

Hey, why is a depressed rancher different than any other person suffering from mental illness?

I never had kids, but one time I was worked so hard, under so much stress that I couldn’t even remember my name. I stammered for a good five seconds if it wasn’t ten. Someone else had to tell me what my name was.

Wha???? The world has gone mad. Is it cruel and unusual to brand now?

You know, I don’t often forget about the windows in my car (and I don’t often travel with my dog) but you’ve made me aware to be super-careful in future.

Why doesn’t this seem to happen with the same relative frequency in the winter? i.e., leaving child to die in freezing car.

God bless you for admitting that. The human brain can only handle so much stress. It compartmentalizes, trying to sort things out.

Some working mothers go through something close to hell.

I don’t know if ranchers brand any more. Modern methods and all. But if a rancher gets depressed and his cattle suffer from neglect, he’s thrown in prison. A felon. Forget that depression is mental illness because he’s an ‘evil rancher’.

I mean, what rancher wants to neglect his investment? He loses money. Nature keeps him on the straight and narrow.
