The art of Joseph Christian Leyendecker from the 20's, to the music of Jazz Age: Hot Sounds of the 20's and 30's. This is the 20s follow on, Part 2, to the Oughts and 10s previously posted. The 30s is still to come. Leyendecker was a mentor of Norman Rockwell, who eventually took over the Saturday Evening Post illustration work from Leyendecker.

Leyendecker looks, with increased exposure, very Aryan.
The Age is captured, IMO, by John Held Jr.
Leydendecker, as the name suggests, is German. Didn’t come across Held, but did see a lot of Coles Phillips, who I’ll probably do at some point in the future. I’m very attracted to the men in Leyendecker’s art. I love the chins, especially, which seem to remind me of the Superman comics that were my early love.
Outstanding video. Makes me want to go out and buy a nice three-piece suit, homburg hat and a snappy pair of white spats.
I’ll need a picture and a great piece of music!
J.C. Leyendecker, my all time favorite illustrator. What talent, what a style!
Rockwell idolized Leyendecker until he found out JC was gay, then pfffttttt.
Love the video.
Sincere thanks, Bean. Deeply appreciated.
As a female, artists never present me with the models that I most enjoy, though I was brought up to see the artistic beauty of the female form. Even female artists seem to concentrate on painting children and babies. The reason I can’t find any interest in Mary Cassatt. But FINALLY an artist who paints sexy men. Couldn’t care less why, just grateful that he and I both enjoy the same images. Thank you, Leyendecker!
What I especially love is the variation in his style. He seems to have such control over his work. I always try to show the fundamentals in these videos, so I’m using a lot of his studies, rather than final pieces. Notice that from his earliest work, his studies have a grid of lines and Xs in which he sizes his proportions. I haven’t seen that before. I wondered if he was working from photos, but saw a photo of him working with a live model in full football gear and posture.

The jazz is what I’m trying to avoid for Rockwell. Where I could see Leyendecker’s sophistication with jazz, even imagining teenagers dancing in a soda shop doesn’t do it for me for Rockwell. I’m looking for something more nostalgic and gentle. But I’ll keep these in mind if I find another early artist with the NY feel. Thank you both.
I WANT ONE! Absolutely adorable. Have you seen my puppy video?

When we lost our last Bichon, we were thinking of getting a Coton, but the breeder didn’t mention that it was take a puppy we didn’t want or wait several years for one we did want. So we got a Havanese and a Bichon elsewhere. But I did make him a music video from his litter footage.
