NATIONAL MOONSHINE DAY – June 5
https://nationaldaycalendar.com ^ | n/a | n/a

Posted on 06/05/2018 12:04:08 PM PDT by heterosupremacist

This beverage has a notorious record of blurring the lines of history and the law, turning ordinary men (and women) into criminals and common criminals into legends.

Moonshine traditionally is an illegally distilled spirit. Mostly made from a corn mash, moonshine is a distilled whiskey that is typically produced by an individual illegally without a permit. Also known as white lightning, mountain dew, homebrew, hillbilly pop, rotgut and too many more to list here.

Distilling skills first came to the United States during the 1830s with the Scotch-Irish as they settled in Virginia.

Temperance laws and prohibition legislation were passed in several states before the Civil War, but it wasn’t until the turn of the century that the temperance movement picked up steam. By the time the 18th Amendment was ratified early in 1919, over half the country was dry.

Prohibition lasted 13 years. It created a demand for moonshine unlike any that may have existed before. Moonshine became big business overnight.

These days, moonshine in the legal sense has a following. Small-batch distilleries are producing legal moonshine giving moonshiners a new name.

•Shepherd was Uncle Jesse’s CB handle on the Dukes of Hazzard. Sweet Tillie was the name of his Ford LTD/Galaxie in the first episode – his moonshine runner.

•The X’s on the moonshine jugs symbol represents the number of times a batch was run through the still. If marked XXX, the moonshine is pure alcohol.

•During prohibition, there were many ways to transport bootlegged moonshine.

… Faking a funeral was a convenient ruse to move the product. Out of respect for the dead, of course, those with the badge were reluctant to stop a funeral procession...

Distilling skills first came to the United States during the 1830s with the Scotch-Irish as they settled in Virginia.

I think those skills were here quite a while before that. George Washington was one of the largest distillers in the colonies.

These days, moonshine in the legal sense has a following.

There are even some wild rumors that illegal distilling is still going on here in Virginia. The alcoholic beverage laws are still archaic.

I visit Bali Indonesia every year for two months. You are allowed to bring one liter of alcohol each time one enters the country. Otherwise if you want to buy in grocery stores for instance a bottle of Jose Cuervo is about $75 USD. So I will buy a local spirit called arak which is distilled from a product called tuak which is fermented palm sugar. A 2 liter bottle of arak is about $7.50 USD. Good when mixed with Sprite or some honey.

Where I stay it's very safe to drink but in some other areas there have been occasions where people are poisoned by the addition of methanol to fortify weak distillations. Mostly in heavy tourist areas serving cheap drinks.

Still going on in Georgia too. Somebody up in the mountains gave Mr. GG2 a pint jar of it last month. I warned him not to drink it. I saw it sitting up on a pantry shelf the other day so soon I'll dump it down the drain. 😕

Lousy history. The SCOTS and Irish came before the revolution and settled in the Blue Tidge and Smoky Mountains.....Appalachia

They did what they had always done. Figured out a way to maximize their profits. Corn in and of itself wasn’t very profitable. Shine on the other hand....

The SCOTS and Irish fought against the Brits and had important wins during the revolution

Doesn’t it make you want to take a drink out of a Mason jar?

Put a flame to it to be sure. Did some distilling while in the Middle East for a time. A fun way to occupy free time.

Just like illegal marijuana is big business today.

"Golly That's Good"
By Jim Tom Hedricks

Back in 1955, I met a man, his name was Clyde.
If you're fixin' to find out, what moonshine is all about.

In 1962, I was runnin' 180-proof, too.
Non-tax paid alcohol. I was a-runnin' from the law.

Golly that's good, keeps you slicked up.
A little bit'll do ya, man it's good stuff.
They call it white lightnin', fire water, too.
A jar full of frog-eyes lookin' at you.
You need to drink ya some, son, if you can.

Lord have mercy, I'm a moonshinin' man.
Oh, Lord have mercy, I'm a moonshinin' man!

Pure alcohol, you people.

You would be amazed at the gallons of shine produced/sold here in central New York. It IS illegal, but only if you get caught!

Woodsmen are smart, cagey, resourceful, and not people to be messed with.

The are also not out to harm or damage people or property. Good folks...

Better to let hibernating bears lie!
