Officers responded to the location on a service call involving a subject brandishing a knife in the area of Planet Fitness, he said
Police say the suspect described as in his 30s -had a folding knife that was approximately four inches in length, which he was waving around in the parking lot.
Witnesses said the man was holding a snake and doing some sort of ritualistic dance with the snake in the parking lot, according to CBS2s Michele Gile.
An aquarium was spotted at the scene, but no snake was spotted at the location.
When the man refused to comply with officers commands and continued toward them, the officer-involved shooting occurred, said Harris.

Never bring a snake to a gun fight!
Never bring a knife to a.... Oh, never mind.
Note to self:
Do not dance with snake and knife in parking lots...................
Could the police Depts. employ some kind of ballistic netting for this kind of situation? Why is the escalation immediately to shooting a crazy person?
Might have been Hopi or Appalachian.
There will be a video out soon. With out the video I’m going to say he may not have needed to be shot and killed but we will see.
Carlos Danger.
Two or three years ago it was just another snake cult, now... they’re everywhere.
They told him to put down the snake, but he only understood ancient Aramic at that moment.
Hard to believe most these cops run around in brand new SUVs costing tax payers big tax dollar$$ but the cities and counties can’t afford to keep a shotgun with bean bags/rubber rounds or stun guns in their vehicles.
This guy was obviously very mentally ill, so drop him dead? Seems a bit overkill from my perspective.
Who was the man threatening?
I still remember the following case - 2 officers killed by crazy guy - http://protectsanjose.com/content/remembering-fallen-officers-gordon-silva-and-gene-simpson
I’m not asking officers to get within attack range, if it’s a gun, all bets are off. If they are in an open area and there is no gun, why can’t they launch a net from a safe distance?
It seems they we’re not responding to a “Crazy guy” but a typical disturbance call according to your link. Those cops were likely surprised by the mental case. In this report those who called 911 must have reported man snake dancing in parking lot while waving a freaking knife. They could have put a rubber bullet into his bread basket and dropped him like a bad habit the moment they arrived.
Any report on the condition of the snake?
It seems like LEO’s view any animal as a potential “threat” these days.
It’s still on the run.....er .crawl.
