EDISON — A police department already mired in other scandals is also being investigated for officers using illegal steroids, according to a report.

Citing anonymous sources, a report on NJ.com said at least 15 officers were tested for steroids, and five have been placed on desk duty as a result of the investigation. The story cites sources claiming the department has a ledger showing which officers were involved, and transactions of the drugs in the department.

The investigation into illegal steroid use came about as part of the investigation of Officer Paul Pappas, who was charged with using a law enforcement database to stalk his ex-girlfriend, and then slashing her tires.

Beat police are up against young, strong, violent, and very often hopped-up criminals. Can’t blame them for wanting to bulk up.

Is it the perps these officers are worried about, or departments cracking down on overweight, out of shape LEOs?

Both, maybe.

It's still illegal. They already have a bad enough reputation for circling the wagons around every "officer," no matter the circumstances.

It’s usually pretty easy to pick out the ‘roid cops from pictures. Or just read about the ones that go into pitbull type rages.

Plus, I doubt LEOs get compensated for gym/training time. Mandatory overtime would cut into gtym/training time. Older LEOs might be more inclined to use PEDs because staying in shape is harder...

I’d like to see their home run numbers for the annual softball game against the fire department.

Vehicles provide addded safety and security, but maybe more foot patrols are a better idea....

'Roid Rage, guns, and badges are a bad combination.

Anabolic steroids can make a person angry, aggressive and have loss of impulse control. Any cops taking them need to turn in their guns and badges immediately.

Not just Edison cops. Most police and state troopers I see nowadays look like body builders or NFL linemen. What’s up with that?
