A young child is severely injured after being bitten in the face by a dog in Wallingford on Friday night, according to police.
Police say they received multiple calls about a young child being bitten in the face by a dog on 10 Simpson Avenue around 7:45 p.m.
Officers say they found a 61-year-old man and his two grandchildren, ages one and six, near Center Street sitting in the back of a car that had stopped to help. According to police, the grandfather was holding his 1-year-old grandson who had suffered severe injuries to his head and face. His 6-year-old granddaughter had also suffered a bite wound to her buttocks area.
The two children were transported to Yale Pediatric Hospital for treatment and the man was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officers say.
Investigators learned the dog, an English Bulldog, was with its owner in the backyard of a house on Simpson Avenue when the dog walked to the front yard and approached the man and his grandchildren as they walked by on the sidewalk. According to the dog's owner, the dog attacked the child when the man started yelling at the dog and pulled a stroller away.
Officers say the dog's owner is cooperating with the investigation. The dog is currently under quarantine by Wallingford Animal Control, however officials say he is up to date with his rabies vaccinations.
Police have not released the name of the dog's owner. The names of the victims have also not been released.
That is not normally a breed that is vicious.
We just lost our Old English Bulldog. The gentlest, sweetest dog you’d ever want to meet. We joked she would lick an intruder to death.
Every bulldog I’ve ever met was the same way. I wonder what was wrong with this one?
I wonder if it was some sort of English Bulldog cross—if you know what I mean.
But those are some powerful jaws and my guess is that this one was ‘intact’.
....pit bull disguised as a English bulldog
Wallingford really isn’t a nice town anymore. I could always be wrong, but this town is full of pitbull-americans.
Wallingford is a pit.
So is Bristol but there are a few neighborhoods that look nice. I couldn’t afford to live in Wallingford yet “the night life” there is bad beyond reason.
All of ct is like that though. Areas I can’t afford to live in are still expensive for no reason.
Bull dogs are terriers. Intelligent, possessive, territorial, not a good breed to mix with children unless monitored. Children must be taught to respect these traits.
Oh, so I can see now how this was totally the grandfathers fault, and his grandson deserved to be maimed for life. How dare he yell at the owners dog?
The street actually loops pretty nice, well maintained. House was sold this past December. Don’t know if new buyers are in it, or they’re renting it out. If the people living there are new to the neighborhood, that may explain why the owners were so lax with their dog. Also, bulldogs can be used for dogfighting, and are used to breed dogs for dogfighting. I hope the cops are taking a real good look at that owner. And the dog needs to be euthanized.
I grew up in Wallingford, having lived most of my life there. The downtown area lost its charm when the big box stores came in, but seemed to go upscale. While there were always rough areas like Judd Square and Quinnipiac, it was nothing like Meriden, New Britain or even Hamden. We never wanted to be Cheshire. For instance, I didn’t know of much in the way of real gang activity. (Other than being left, like most of Connecticut) How has quality of life worsened in Wallingford? Pit is a pretty strong term.
many years ago my kids and i were walking past a house. The dog broke off the rope and chased us down. Bit my kid on her rump.
Owner said “it was because you ran” when we saw the dog charge us. No, you have a mean dog.
It was base housing, and the young couple could not produce any shot records, so MP’s took the dog away.
I see what Puppage means. It’s a little different when you describe a CT town to others, and even to those entrenched in that town.
A friend of mine (RIP Last week, actually) lived at the base of that hill in Cheshire/Southington where the castle is. That neighborhood is awesome. Go to the end of the street and the whole picture changes. It turns into a nice neighborhood in the Bronx.
As a lower income person from BPT I learned that the further things were from BPT the more expensive. I could afford, at best, to get to Ansonia. I couldn’t even afford Wallingford.
But I helped a friend of mine who broke down on the highway enroute to MA. He lived in Lowell.
The gas station we met at Wallingford was a warzone ! There was a guy who appeared to be employed there, but the cashier wouldn’t allow him behind the glass. The crowd that formed there was described as “typical” and had nothing but Obama’s sons hanging out in the parking lot, tons of sport bikes escalades and pitbulls causing a general ruckus.
My friend from LOWELL said “This place is bad, man”
Lowell is one of the worst towns in the US.
Sorry for your loss KosmicKitty. I currently own 4 EB’s....you are correct, they are usually the sweetest and most gentle dogs. We have been owned by EB’s for well over 20 yrs now, and it is very unusual for one to attack, but I guess it can happen. Makes me wonder if this particular EB was a rescue...who was treated badly by a previous owner? And something triggered his attack on the man and his grandchildren? Sad....I do hope the kids will be ok?
When I was growing up, Wallingford was a nice town. I guess morons from New Haven moved in.
It isn’t the dog’s fault, it’s the owner’s. Dogs should never be allowed to get outside their yards on their own. Even the friendliest of dogs if only so they don’t get run over or themselves hurt.
Yeah, shame on that one year old not respecting the dogs temperament.
Bred for baiting Bulls, at one point. A brachycephalic Staffordshire Bull Terrier, for all intents and purposes.
I suspect journalistic laziness. Bull dog, pit bull all the same tho them.
