Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, hurricane forecasters said at 9 a.m. Friday.

Alberto is the first named Atlantic storm of 2018, and has formed ahead of the traditional hurricane season which begins June 1.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and rip currents to the Gulf Coast through Memorial Day weekend.

Here's the current forecast cone for the storm:

The main difference between a subtropical storm and tropical storm is core temperature, according to Shawn O'Neil, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Slidell. Subtropical storms have slightly lower core temperatures than tropical storms. It's also possible that Alberto will transition to a tropical storm, he said.

Is a Subtropical storm the same thing as tropical depression... When did we start naming tropical depressions?

property insurance: Hurricane and Named Storm Deductibles

The insurance industry benefits from the current practice of naming every little tropical depression.

Oh no....These storms don't start till June 1. Global warning for sure.

It's gonna rain and be a little windy. Might want to keep your rowboat hunkered down.

Wow, now I see. Glad I do not live in Fla. I was raise in Lauderdale, left when I was 18, never look back.

I notice a lot of people are relocating to SC because of the cost of home insurance. Hopefully they do not bring their South Fla voting habits here..

And be ready for the media storyline.

Remember how the media tried to make Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico last year into “Trump’s Katrina”?? The media sad to say, are eager to both push global warming as a cause of hurricanes, and , since the hated (by them) Trump is president, they are eager to blame Trump for any aspect of disaster relief which doesn’t go well.

A Subtropical storm has a lower core temperature. I guess that’s a good thing.

Well then, we better pony up more taxpayer dollars to the UN before it’s too late. Yeah, that’ll fix everything!

Really? But the SC coast is prone to hurricanes too. Is insurance really that much cheaper in SC?

Did you buy your carbon credits yet?

I’m remiss in my duties and have not bought carbon credits.

I’m also a bad boy, because I haven’t made my donation to the Clinton foundation yet........

I live in the upstate of SC in the mountains. My home owners insurance is around $500 and the flood insurance is 425 a year.

I have flood insurance because I live on a river, the house is elevated about the flood plain so I get a discount.

My new neighbor was claiming they paid close to $5000 a year for their Hollywood Fla home (1200 sqft). They sold and left Florida, living like King and Queens now compare to S Fla.

Subcommander Zero!

Those weather people are huffing paint thinner at the first sign of a dark cloud. They gotta drum up interest in their otherwise vapid "shows".
