The National Hurricane Center increased the chances that a mass of clouds and storms in the Caribbean could become something tropical, designating it the first invest of the year.
So called invest 90-L has a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical or sub tropical system as it moves north into the Gulf of Mexico over the next five days.
The word invest is short for investigation an area to look more closely at for potential development. The hurricane center numbers them 90 to 99 with the letter L, which stands for Atlantic.
Another update on invest 90-L will be issued before 8 p.m.
Hurricane center forecasters said strong winds aloft and dry air are expected to limit organization of the system during the next couple of days, but some development is possible late this week.
Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible across western Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and much of Florida during the next several days, said hurricane center meteorologist Eric Blake in a morning discussion.
Although a return to a normal rainy season pattern of afternoon showers and thunderstorms is expected through mid-week, another days-long downpour may begin Thursday and continue into Memorial Day.
If the area grows to tropical storm status, it would be named Alberto.
It looks like a wet weekend for South Florida, said Larry Kelly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.

That would be too cool.
I was going to put it in “Breaking News!”.
I live about 60 miles south of Tampa and the rainfall has been heavy for over a week.
We may need Noah.
I saw you all were having a lot of continuous rain. I live north of New Orleans and we have been pretty dry and not is not always a good thing. A lot of rain after a dry spell can wreck havoc.
Screws up my golf weekend with 19 buddies.
But this is after going months without any appreciable rain.
We need it so the pasture grass will grow for our cows to eat.
It's growing now. :-)
Watching the grass grow is one of my favorite past times.
Oh no, it might develop into a Storm! Call Mr. Global-warmed-over.
John SKerry, please save us....ahole.
Lighten Up, McGraw.
More proof of GoreBull warming, I tell ya!
It’s Francis!
