I believe the Obama Administration planned to take Trump down by recording members of the Campaign or Trump making racist comments. The media denied that he was spied on at first, and now there was a plant. Why would Obama be spying on Trump, because he was concerned about Russia, yet he didn't stop the Russian hacking?
While they certainly would have welcomed the opportunity I don’t think anyone should think that they were doing anything but spying for political advantage, even to the point of trying to entrap individuals.
Obama had and used his enemies list.
Just as Clinton did.
They were willing to do whatever it takes.
For all the spying they did, they didn’t find anything so they had to make things up.
They spied on Trump campaign to find ways to defeat Trump.. They were desperate to keep him from becoming President.. They had so much to lose, as we are finding out.
An additional thought: about the narrative of the spy himself and how it seems to be leaning towards an actual intelligence asset.
Here’s the thought: that they were perfectly willing to throw away an actual intelligence asset, and the man’s life, just for this effort. With nothing of national security on the line, just their own power.
Such people are utterly contemptible.
They were looking for anything useful. They didn’t find anything, so they proceeded to fabricate the Russian story.

The defeat of hitlery was known by lamestream at 9 pm election evening. The panic meeting began while left coast had two hours plus left to vote. Hitlery’s loss was not able to be covered up. The coverup was plan B. When plan B was unable to be implemented plan C was initiated called the Russian probe

Yep, I think you’re on track there. They made up the Russian crap, but they were looking for ANYTHING for Cabbage Patch to be able to use against Trump, such as a campaign aide using the N-Word or something similar.
What’s AMAZING is that they still couldn’t find anything. If our side were given the same access to spy on the Democrats, we’d have more crap than we could ever know what to do with...starting with the ‘deals’ made for Clinton Foundation ‘donations’.
