I've read that the regime is of the Islamic Alawite sect. They're in such a minority compared to Sunni & Shia that they ally with Christians to maintain their positions of power.
Alawites are very unusual, they are a spin off from the Shia. They have elements of Christianity & Zoroastrianism mixed in with their Shi’ism. Until recently the Shia persecuted them as a heresy. The current alliance to fight Israel is one of convenience.
The Alawite sect is a twelver sect. They along the ruling Mullahs are waiting for the 12th Imam to ascend from his well and bring on Armageddon.
