Not sure why Pier 39, it is a very trendy, busy shopping area where one might want to meet if you did not want your conversation recorded.
I dimly recall directional mikes from "my" era that could pick one speaker out of a crowd of 100 or more and I'm sure the technology has advanced a tad since '67.
