LANTANA — A Lantana-area man said he bit his 2-year-old dog’s ear in an attempt to “establish dominance,” Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records show.

Patrick Shurod Campbell, 27, was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control took control of the Husky, Dimitri.

Officers went to Campbell’s apartment, south of Lantana Road and east of Congress Avenue, to investigate a complaint that someone was abusing a dog, according to the report.

There, Campbell’s two roommates told the officer that Campbell “beat the hell” out of it, PBSO said.

On Wednesday, Dimitri destroyed items in Campbell’s apartment, including a pack of cigarettes, the sheriff’s report said. Campbell came with a replacement pack of cigarettes and showed it to Dimitri, and the dog laid flat on the ground, according to the report.

While the dog was down, Campbell tried to grab the dog’s neck to discipline him, PBSO said.

When officers came early Thursday morning, Dimitri was barricaded in a dark bedroom closet. When the light came on, Dimitri was shaking and laying his ears flat, according to a report. The bedroom smelled like urine and feces, and blood was smeared on the floor and a chair arm rest, according to the report.

Dimitri’s ear had blood on it and a cut, PBSO said. When officers asked Campbell about it, they said Campbell said he bit the dog to “establish dominance.”

On Friday, Judge Ted Booras set Campbell’s bail at $10,000 and ordered him to have no contact with animals.

Animal Care and Control Capt. Dave Walesky said Campbell voluntarily gave up the dog, and there will not be a custody case.

Dimitri will be placed with a rescue partner in the next few days, and will likely not be up for public adoption with Animal Care and Control, he said.

Romy Ellenbogen @romyellenbogen This is Dimitri, the dog who was bit by his owner. He’s currently with animal control and quarantined, but isn’t in the hospital. 12:26 PM - May 11, 2018

The dog is quarantined while the owner is tested for rabies..

They didn’t come out right.

The owner should’ve been quarantined while being tested for rabies. If found positive, the owner should be put down.

Put Patrick in the ring with Mike Tyson and cover his ears with a little BBQ sauce.

I’ll stick with training it to obey my commands. And take away the food dish while it is eating. I still like to do that one once in awhile - although my wife thinks it is just teasing after so many years.

However, if it’s going through something where it doesn’t want to eat, I’ll stick my face in his dish and pretend to eat. Then he wants a piece of the action, and when I move away he’ll shoulder his 80 pounds in there and start eating.
