Looking for a thrill. They found it. Plenty of places to bike here in the states.

I hit over fourty on a steep hill near my house once. Then my newspaper bag got wrapped up in the front spokes. I hit the pavement hard and bounced back in the air. I still have a vivid mental image of blood splattering on the pavement in front of my second landing approach. I broke my jaw, a tooth, and had severe road rash. I’ve since flat tracked motorcycles and have over 1/4 million miles on road bikes. I’ve never banged myself up that badly on one.

You need to go check out Quinnhill Rd. It’s the steep road in your neck of the woods. I have run up it and biked down it quite a few times! Not recently though. 😀

Yeah...you’d think I would have learned the first time, wouldn’t you? But 13 years has a way of dulling the pain and memories.

One of my wife’s best friends has been hit by cars THREE times on her bike. The most recent one shattered her pelvis. She is doing great (strong, resilient woman!) and now walking seven miles at a good pace without any assistance (no poles, no cane). She wants to get back on her bike again! My wife is trying to talk her out of it, but she loves it too much.

I’ve taken walks over Quinhill many times. It IS steep, no doubt.

I went out to Mindego Hill today and hiked about six miles. Must have passed 50 or 60 bicyclists on Page Mill. Everybody was out it seems.

If you had to do it again - what’s a bit of pain compared to a lifetime of sea stories? We’re only young once. If youth only knew; if age only could.

“If youth only knew; if age only could.”

Nice saying - I can relate!

Also: “Too soon old, too late smart.”

You also need questionable judgment to do it...or a death wish.

"...the only road in the US that seems similar to me is the east side of Tioga Pass going up from Nevada to Yosemite..."

If you're into speed, I highly recommend that road!

A person could maybe get up to 45 there.

Oh, and if you don't stop at the end you'll end up on the flats of what used to be Mono Lake.

Another great downhill in that area? (100 miles away): The road to Whitney Portal.

At one point in time I lived on my bicycle and was able to bicycle over 100 miles each day. I am also fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. I used to travel extensively in Mexico. Today the idea of traveling, let alone bicycling, in Mexico is insane. One might as well apply for the top Darwin Award.
