Tim Allen, you can probably thank Roseanne for this: Last Man Standing is getting a new lease on life and it appears the revival will stick this time around.
A year after its controversial cancellation at ABC, the Allen-fronted comedy is poised to be resurrected by Fox for the 2018-19 TV season, TVLine has learned. Allen has, per sources, signed a deal for a potential Season 7 and conversations are underway with key cast members and EPs from the original incarnation to join him.
Last Mans axing after six seasons caused a bit of an uproar last May, with some speculating that Allens well-vocalized, right-wing beliefs may have been a factor. Allen himself added fuel to the conspiracy theory last fall, telling Norm Macdonald Live, Theres nothing more dangerous, especially in this climate, than a funny, likable conservative. ABCs top exec, Channing Dungey, disputed the claim, however, insisting the sitcom was axed after we made the decision not to continue with comedies on Friday.
Cable net CMT later entered into preliminary discussions with owner 20th Century Fox TV to rescue the series, but those talks eventually fell apart over money.
The recent runaway success of ABCs Roseanne revival prompted 20th to reassess Last Mans viability, and its sister network which could use a comedy hit was the logical home. Reps for Fox and 20th Century declined to comment for this story.
If he needs to thank anyone, it would be Rosanne's fans.
Allen...like Roseanne....is a natural.
If they bring it back, I hope they 86 the liberal plants in the core character list, and go back to the season 1 format.
We don’t need another All in the Family.
GOOD! Was one of the few and rare current shows that wasn’t flaming left wing and gave a voice to conservative points of view. It was very balanced, moderate, and Hollywierd still hated it because it wasn’t lock step liberal.
The funniest show ever cancelled. I’m afraid Hollywood may threaten the other actors.
Non-leftism sells. Their wallets are smarter than their bleeding hearts.
It was better during the first few seasons and they would have a constant fan if they could get back to it.
I thought if Meathead, too. They said they wanted someone for Allen to spar with. The black guy is a good character for that and he’s funny.
The one episode where the guy just moved in and they have them over is hilarious!!
“I’ll just put this in the Fridge.”
“Why would you, it’s a candle.”
Haha!
we made the decision not to continue with comedies on Friday.....so they couldn’t move it to another night? ABC airs many ‘loser’ shows (compared to Last Man ratings) that could have been bumped for the admittedly ‘successful’ comedy, raising ABC’s ratings.
I'd be glad if they had Ryan take off again and stay gone.
I agree the black guy was a much better antagonist than the meathead-esque liberal dope married to the newly cast liberal dope daughter introduced in the second season.
The actress who played his oldest daughter in the first season was also a lot better looking. (so at least the liberal daughter’s casting was accurate in that sense)
I’ve wondered if the first daughter didn’t refuse to “play” with someone. I can’t stand the new daughter.
Yes! I watch the re-runs all the time
I dropped it because of season two, episode one. The new actress sucked, ALL the daughters took the Obama side, including the middle girl who always took her dads side in season one, and the mom proclaimed, HALLELUJAH! when the older girl listed as a plus that Obama was for abortion. It was said at the time that the new showrunners wanted to get away from the conservative politics of the first season. Ive heard it got better, but I dont stick around when people hallelujah abortion.
Kevin Can Wait is a pretty conservative show that has become worse in the second season because of showrunner meddling, but at least it hasnt gotten liberal.
“Man with a plan” is surprisingly non-liberal on CBS especially considering it stars Matt LeBlance
I never watched it until you guys here posted that it was cancelled. so last 5 weeks I’ve been binge-watching it and was so sad this week to finish it. Show was hilarious - and I really enjoyed Tim promoting Conservative and Christian viewpoints - even Nancy. It was a sweet show.
I’m glad it may have a chance to come back.
Yay!
