This sick, sick society "apprehends" anyone with a pellet gun at school.
When I was in high school, we had guns in gun racks. ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. And the school superintendent would meet us as we came into the parking lot, TO ASK WHAT WE HAD BROUGHT IN ON OUR MORNING HUNT!

Pellet guns have evolved to be capable of killing humans, although this was not likely the type here. But still, could seriously injure soft spots on the body.

NCOs being surprised that Alvin York owned a rifle.
York was drafted during World War I; he initially claimed conscientious objector status on the grounds that his denomination forbade violence.
Maybe that was the reason?
