Maybe they pretended to plant it for the photo-op but it’s actually going to be planted somewhere else, by experts?

No mystery. It was removed and put in quarantine to address parasites. It will be replanted. They said it is doing well.

It looks like the spot has replaced turf although yellowed, hard to imagine what it would look like if it had been yanked out by some thief.
The only thing we can hope for is that it was ceremonially symbolic and carefully removed and taken to nurture until fall planting or whenever would be the best chances to survive and flourish.
I hope we are told; the cryptic comment from France might mean they know where it is and is doing all right.

Apparently, no one was watching that area of the White House lawns. I would have thought a camera would have been recording in each direction throughout each day. I guess not.

When I first heard the story, I thought a better location would be a section of Arlington National cemetery that had dead from WW1.
I hope that if not at the White House it is given a great place to grow strong.

The Company once knew where two Soviets sat outside for lunch when the weather was nice. It was in a fenced area they could not get to. They arranged for a bullet with a transmitter inside to be fired at the tree. Unfortunately the bark was too rough to amplify the sound and it never worked.

Maybe the Russians believe one of their global warming nuts who says Siberia is running short of trees and decided to nab this one for replanting.
