The Nazis, the communists, almost every evil group in the past began by portraying themselves as victims. Every victim needs a villain, either real or imaginary. It also allows them to do things they otherwise would not be able to. Today it might be “He wouldn’t bake me a cake”. Tomorrow, “his life is not worthy of living”.

The more victimized they can portray Group A, the more villainous they can portray Group B, providing a pretext for draconian action against Group B.
