Sort of like two people with FR handles who rarely post in public, but use FReepmail/Private Reply. Many forums have "private" comm function.

There are other methods that are more transient.

My grandkids have been using that method as one to try to circumvent parents for several years.

Yes, I could see game forum communications being an avenue. You can either go text or live chat. I’ve used Overwolf before playing Battlefield Bad Company II. It would be relatively easy to have those recorded or logged from the spooky folk standpoint.

I wonder what sort of multiplayer games all these folks are into from the standpoint of it being a communication option?
