SIERRA VISTA Whether shopping online, sending emails or connecting with friends, the internet while essential has opened the floodgates for identity theft, fraud and hackers.
In todays world, understanding how to protect yourself from cybercrime is extremely important, said Carol Capas, Cochise County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman. While the internet has become an essential part of everyday life, it can also be a breeding ground for cyberattacks.
In an effort to educate the public on how to protect personal and financial information, the CCSO is hosting a Cybercrime Prevention Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday in the Horace Steele Room of the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus.
We live in a society where cyber is global and has a direct impact on all of us, both positive and negative, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said. Our focus in public safety is to educate and prevent our citizens from the evil people that use cyber means to violate you and your love ones. We encourage everyone to be aware and guarded when surfing the cyber highways.
Ty Holland, a former member of the Sheriffs Assist Team who now works with the CCSO public information division, is one of the presenters, Capas said.
Ty will be leading the presentation on cybersecurity, and Ill be talking about the significant increase in scams that are targeting victims throughout the country and what people can do to protect themselves, Capas said.
The goal is to educate the public on how they can help themselves and not become a victim.
Ty (Holland) has extensive background in cybersecurity, and is very knowledgeable, Capas said. Hes going to be talking about hacking devices and how to protect yourself from having your personal information stolen.
Cyberbullying through different forms of social media is another topic that will be addressed.
Bullying has become a huge problem for all young people, especially teens, because its harmful, false and mean content can be sent anonymously, Capas said. We want to stress the importance of staying involved in your childrens activities when it comes to social media. powered by
The workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Its intended as an informational, community outreach service for the public.
