GQ faces backlash over inclusion of Bible in list of '21 Books You Don't Have to Read'

The Bible isn't required reading -- according to GQ.

The magazine is facing criticism after it included The Good Book in its list of "21 Books You Don't Have to Read" last week.

Compiled by GQ editors, the post laments that "the Great Books" aren't all they're cracked up to be: "Some are racist and some are sexist, but most are just really, really boring."

"Census" author Jesse Ball says the Bible (No. 12 on the list) is highly rated by people who claim to live by it but haven't actually read the tome.

"Those who have read it know there are some good parts, but overall it is certainly not the finest thing that man has ever produced," Ball writes for GQ. "It is repetitive, self-contradictory, sententious, foolish, and even at times ill-intentioned."

Christians disagreeing with Ball took to social media to defend the Bible.

Each of the 21 books on GQ's list includes what people should read instead. Ball suggests "The Notebook" by Agota Kristof in place of the Bible.

Other books GQ says not bother with include "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien, "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger and "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.

I checked out the entire list. Of the 21 books, I've only read three of them: "Dracula", "The Lord of the Rings", and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

On the other hand, I've only read a single one of their suggested replacements, the "Earthsea" series.

At what number did GQ place the Koran?

Surprised the author didn’t throw in some C.S. Lewis, Chaucer, Milton, or Dante. Although his list seems to be what you would find on a pretentious reading list, with some required high school reading throw in with the Bible just for spite

Odd. The Bible made the “don’t read” list, but the Koran didn’t.

On second thought, it’s not so odd. It’s quite fashionable for the foppish elite to mock Christians and Jews. But they dare not mock the Muslims. Not only is that politically incorrect, it can get you killed.

I believe by clicking on the link, this is the first and only time I have had a look at GQ. I don’t seem to have missed anything.

The magazine is a dying publication. GQ like most magazines and newspapers has been hijacked by agenda driven liberals. In this case the gay mafia.

Ursula Leguin (Earthsea) is relentlessly dour and dreary.

If the subject of this article is “The backlash” that GQ has received for it’s anti-Bible article, I expected to see what comments the ‘backlash’ consisted of.
It would have been helpful to know how many such responses were sent in.
If GQ did this to create buzz, they’ve gotten their wish.
I don’t think this publicity stunt will benefit them, though.

Well, I didn't say that I liked it, particularly. :-)

So how the hell did GQ suddenly become the final arbiter of what anyone should read? Liberals always have a problem with tolerance, starting with themselves. Nonsense.

Using the subs at gq you don’t have to read any books. But to anyone with an IQ above their shoe size reading - including the Bible, comes highly recommended.

I’m surprised that GQ is still published. This seems like a desperate attempt at click bait by a magazine that’s on financial life support. They should thank whatever Christian group responded to them because without that “controversy”, the article would have gone just as unnoticed as every other one of their articles.

For some reason the scene in the classroom in Searching For Bobby Fischer comes to mind . . . “Pinochle” . . .
