Basically, I think all he did was to not go along to get along. Our country was on a ruinous path, and my conspiracy theory is that Comey is an enforcer to keep people with resources from stepping out of line by having compassion on the people of this great nation.
This is not a Republican vs Democrat thing, this seems to have more to do in part with the Bush family, though it likely doesn't end there. This isn't just "Never Trump" but is "Never Anyone Other Than Who We Have Decided."

Before everyone gets on the Martha Stewart bandwagon, remember she was trying to hang some young stockbroker out to dry to cover up her insider trade. In this case, I think Comey did the right thing.
