Goolaerts collapsed and fell after roughly 100 kilometres of the 260km race...

He turned professional for Vérandas Willems in 2014, switched to the under-23 development team run by Lotto-Soudal for 2015 and 2016, after which he returned to Vérandas Willems, for whom he figured in a long escape at the Tour of Flanders in 2017, staying at the head of the race for over 200km.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the race and, recall when he went down. Some side channel comments about the defibrillator being truly needed for X rider in the back of the peloton...did not think about it.

Now I know and, am saddened.

The article says he had a heart attack which caused him to crash, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital of a cardiac event - not an injury sustained in the crash.

A guy that also worked for my employer, long rumored to have a ‘Hoover’ nose, had a sudden fatal HA in a motor race.

There is no evidence at this time that drugs were involved. But the guy was only 23 years old.
