Teen buys every cupcake from bakery after getting fat-shamed

VALPARAISO, Ind. — An Indiana teen ultimately had the last laugh after being fat-shamed by a customer at a bakery, according to WXIN.

Vega Blossom said she went to Designer Desserts in Valparaiso on Saturday night because they were having a sale.

She waited patiently to purchase six cupcakes while the woman in front of her finalized her cake order. When she finally stepped up to the counter, she heard the customer behind her say to a friend, “Thank God, now let’s hope this fat ***** doesn’t buy all the cupcakes.”

And that’s exactly what Vega decided to do. She said she purchased every last cupcake out of spite.

“I SPENT $54 ON CUPCAKES JUST TO BE A *****. HAPPY EASTER,” Vega wrote on Facebook. Her post went viral and has been shared over 26,000 times.

Hope she slims down, it’ll make her happier. But I very much like her attitude. Nuke em!

What was the movie where the guy says to the fat person, “Eat something! You’re gonna waste away to enormous!”

I just read “Secrets From The Food Lab: The Science of Weight Loss, The Myth of Willpower, and Why You Should Never Diet Again” after hearing the author interviewed on the radio. I hoped it would give me insight into the weight struggles of one of my children.

It was fascinating. Genetics determine our weight far more than we think - even adopted children are more like their birth parents regarding tendencies towards being overweight. There is much more but it would take too much space. Bottom line: overweight people are not just lazy gluttons with no willpower. There is much more involved.

What I found fascinating, my husband found discouraging. He thought it sounded hopeless, maybe I failed to communicate the info well. It’s a good read, years of research in the food lab of the University of Minnesota form the basis for this book.

I have been saying that for years, and I’m slim.

I used to tell people that I was no more responsible for being thin (I eat anything) than heavy people were responsible for being heavy———genetics rules IMHO.

Sounds like she made up a bogus tale of harassment just so she could “go viral”.

Jesus rules, genetics are not greater than Jesus. Willpower is a myth, Jesus is real.

Everyone has a coping mechanism, most “genetically” fat tendency people usually turn to food abuse to cope. Many diets and eating styles (avoiding food groups etc) set the body up for more weight gain or some other body imbalance over time because they are not sustainable or healthy long term. Many people have thyroid issue in teens and don’t realize it until decades later - Low thyroid or other medical diagnosis that may involve weight is not a crutch or permission to be overweight or not exercise or eat healthfully.

People need to find another way to handle stress or whatever feeling emotional trigger they fill with food (bored, joy, lonely, etc).

I know plenty of people who exercise lots but still fat do to food or alcohol abuse, eat late at night, don’t get enough sleep, don’t drink adequate water but eat when really thirst is the issue the body is having.

I know people who eat next to nothing but don’t exercise and they are fat.

God designed the body for balance in ALL areas: spirit, mind and body. If you are off in caring for or were not taught to care for any of those parts it shows up in the actions of the person and in time in the body appearance.

Scripture tells us we are given self control (thru the holy spirit), most of us don’t use it in various areas of our lives. It also tells us to take care of our body (Paul even talks of disciplining his body) so we are able to do the things God wants us to but most people live to please themselves and sucumb to environment and thoughts of their mind rather than renew their mind and improve their body with the words of God.

but the person behind her deserved not to get any cupcakes.

Exactly. Forget the "fat shaming" accusation. How about just being an obnoxious jerk.

The person behind the teen was ill-mannered, rude and has no place in a civil society. It is not ok to mock someone who is different

even if a fat person in front of me buys a whole lot of cupcakes, I cannot presume that they are buying it for themselves

The teen's response was not "wow" - it was dumb. She just confirmed what the people were thinking.

the only response would be to ignore the person or pick an argument - the argument would just rile everyone up and not solve anything.

Fat-shaming, while I am against the mocking of fat people, I think people should not be obese and we should not "celebrate" in any way their obesity. There are a few people who are medically disposed to being obese, but those are a tiny %. The rest of us can manage our own weight

at 49 it's still not too late to get into shape.

The problem you face is what many professional sportsmen and women face - you guys performed at top level and ate at top level to be fit.

But after the activity dies down it is difficult to reduce the food intake

If I may humbly suggest, do try the intermittent fasting route. Start off with a trial to fast for a 24 hour period. Do that once a week for about a month. Then move to the "warrior" diet which is basically eat during a 6 hour window each day (say 1 pm to 7 pm) and fast during the rest while keeping up the weekly 24-hour fast

After 3 months of that try a 3 day fast.

keep up the routine and you'll find that you enjoy the same meals you do, but lose weight

It's not as simple to say "Overweight people are not lazy gluttons" or "genes determine it"

It's really a combination of a lot of things -- genes play a role, but lifestyle, eating habits, exercise habits and childhood obesity play a role

In Dp's case it is fairly normal that athletes like him face

My wife has a high metabolism so can eat twice as me and she is a 110 pound slim lady while I am 190 lbs 6'1" with a far slower metabolism

I need to eat less than her and I also need to eat less carbs than her

That being said, I can put on muscle far, far more easily than her brother (who has the same genes) - so there are pluses and minuses.

Maybe for you. I am older and maintain about 10% body fat (you can clearly see all 8 abs) and actively powerlift 4x a week. Not light weights, either. 600lb one rep max deadlift, for example.

I’m a fat guy by nature.

I defeated that nature with hard work and careful, high protein diet. I eat a LOT of food. It’s just high quality. Meat fish milk nuts veggies. And beer on weekend!

It’s a choice. Yes fat people have to work harder, but it’s hardly impossible.

That’s similar to what the book presents. The head of the Eating Lab at the U of M, Dr. Traci Mann, began her career in psychology. There are many physiological and psychological factors involved.

When I struggled with weight (high school and college years) I was trying so hard to be thinner, but dieting backfires. Not just for me but for almost everyone. I wasn’t super obese, just heavier than I should have been. Diet companies count on repeat customers to make a profit. My mental health was probably a wreck as well.

My take away from the book was veggies first, move more and not everyone’s natural size is skinny. I have to be careful with my child who struggles. A part of my problem was my dad constantly hinting that I needed to lose weight. I would eat more just to spite him (hindsight reveals much).
