It’s actually worse. “Schumer” is a Yiddish name.
“Schumer” in Yiddish means “scum”.

Mind you, the Germans were pretty crappy giving out surnames to Jewish people when the surname laws were passed — Ein Stein (”one ball”) being such an example.
But “scum” was a name reserved for traveling con-men and the like.
I’ve always winced when I heard his name. I can’t believe he didn’t change it.
