Israel edges to NATO as Turkey pivots to Russia. (Should Turkey leave NATO?)
Breaking Defense ^ | Mar 2018 | Arie Egozi

For a while, Turkey and Israel were the unexpected couple, the increasingly Muslim state buying the Jewish state’s weapons and Israel offering Turkey a potentially strategic gas and oil pipeline.

That all changed when Israeli commandos raided the so-called Gaza Freedom Flotilla in May 2010 in international waters of the Mediterranean.

Nine activists were killed, including eight Turkish nationals and one Turkish American, and many were wounded.

That was a turning point in the relations between the two countries. But three years later, the two sides appeared to mend relations.

But as the Syrian civil war spiraled out of control and Daesh swept across Iraq, other forces gathered to disrupt the relationship. As the US worked with Kurdish forces to help destroy Daesh, Turkey grew increasingly angry with the US and has edged closer and closer to Russia...

Today, distrust of Turkey is the norm among high-ranking officials in the Israel defense industries and in the defense establishment. “With Turkey’s new friends, we better stay aside,” one of them told Breaking Defense.

Another said: “We cannot trust Turkey now. Should this country be shown the way out of NATO? What is the alternative?”

Another sign of Turkey’s growing estrangement from NATO: in April 2009, Turkey and Syria held a joint military exercise – the first of its kind between a NATO member and a Russian-armed and trained client state.

Another proof of the increasingly close relations with Russia, more than 50 percent of a pipeline that will supply Turkey with Russian natural gas under the Turkish Stream project has been completed.

Countries in the region are acting to counter the Turkish moves. The defense ministers of Cyprus, Greece and Israel met in Athens late last year to discuss strengthening cooperation to promote security, stability and peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Israel-turkish relations did not sour starting with the boarding of the terrorist ship Marmara. It started years before that when Erdoran insulted Shimon Peres at the Davis economic summit long before boarding a Gaza bound terror ship.

We all knew that Erdogan is/was a nut case. But Obama embraced him because Erdogan was "elected".

The problem is....everyone is still trying to figure out HOW he got elected.

There are at least three large minorities who could break away. They are repressed and are ripe for rebellion. The large military could fragment and tear the country appart.

Turkey, under Erdogan, has become an Islamist state and a security threat to the west..........they should be removed from NATO.

I’m sure that Erdogan is giving Putin and earful, and both Iran and Russia full access to our military hardware..................

(Should Turkey leave NATO?)

The more appropriate question is should Turkey be expelled from NATO? Any question about whether it's time for a country to voluntarily leave NATO would be for the U.S.

Turkish Armed Forces have more frontline soldiers than Russia, Germany, and Israel.

They want rivers of blood in their quest to bring the Caliphate back to the Ottoman Empire!

There are huge geo-political risks to Turkey leaving NATO. It is the principal regional power, militarily on par with Israel. But more serious is its location. Almost anything we do militarily in the region requires our bases in Turkey. And we also need to remember that one of the main objectives of Russian Foreign policy since at least the reign of Catherine II has been access to warm water ports. If Turkey becomes a Russian ally they are 3/4 of the way there since Syria is already a de-facto Russian colony. With Turkey in their corner the Russians no longer have to worry about being bottled up in the Black Sea. I can see a Russian Mediterranean Naval Squadron, or even a fleet with bases in Syria. That would put them within striking range of the Suez Canal.

Turkey becoming an ally of Russia would be a disaster.

So let Turkey stay in NATO where they will have privileged access to information they can pass on to the Russkies? No Thanks.

Would the Turkish military stand by while the country is thrown out of NATO? Only if the officer corps has been so decimated since the coup attempt. Its a mess for sure. Would NATO allow Israel to become a full member? I would certainly help celebrate if that happened.

Prince William is due to make first ever official royal visit to Israel this summer.

Macron has made combatting anti-Semitism a focal point of his agenda, was really well received by Netanyahu, and has withheld judgment of Trump's Jerusalem embassy move. France is also on increasing collision course with Turkey in many ways.

The US should leave NATO. We should realign with Russia, Japan, and South Korea (among others) along with several central European nations (which would take some work given their mistrust of Russia).

This should be predicated on Russian cutting ties with Turkey and Iran and our cutting ties with Saudi Arabia. We should present a unified front against islam and the increasingly fascist islamophiles of western Europe. In addition, we need to isolate China until their aggression in Asia moderates.
