TOMBSTONE — The United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps will be performing at Tombstone High School today.

The unit will be on the high school football field at 10:30 a.m. for a performance that is open to the public.

Stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia, this is the only unit of its kind in the armed forces, and is part of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, according to the Old Guard website.

The musicians wear 1784-circa uniforms patterned after those worn by General George Washington’s Continental Army.

The Corps averages 500 performances annually and has entertained millions of people in a number of major venues to include parades, pageants and historical celebrations throughout the country, as well as serving as a goodwill ambassador in several foreign countries.

“You don’t see a performance like this very often, so for these guys to come to our school is a unique opportunity for our students, staff and community,” said Tombstone High school principal David Thursby. “We’re fortunate to have them here.”

Thursby said Tombstone JROTC instructor Daniel Kilpatrick learned that the group was touring in the area, and contacted them about performing at the high school.

“We’re very excited that they’re coming here,” he said.

It would be cool to have “Tombstone High School” on one’s record ;-). “Kempsville” has no zing.

For some reason, this reminded me of my favorite line from the beginning of the movie 1776, as the Continental Congress is deliberating:

A committee formed to think, perhaps to do...
but in any case, to gather, to meet, to confer, to talk...
and perhaps even to resolve that each rifle regiment...
be allowed at least one drum and one fife attached to each company...
designated as the Drum and Fife Committee.

The Old Guard (not this Fife and Drum Corps but the same unit) performed the burial ceremony for my dear departed FIL in 2000.

They also guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Amazing group of soldiers.
