68% of Indian military equipment is ‘vintage’ say officials
UK Defense Journal ^ | April 2, 2018 | George Allison

Indian officers and officials expressed concerns before an Indian parliamentary committee on defence, service chiefs revealed dire shortfalls in equipment and investment.

According to an article that appeared in the Asia section of the print edition of ‘The Economist’:

“Judging from the three services’ own testimony, the airing of such grievances is long overdue. MPs were told that some 68% of the army’s equipment, much of which was first supplied by the Soviet Union, such as BMP-2 personnel carriers and Shilka anti-aircraft guns, may be described as “vintage”

But I am sure there are call centers to provide assistance when equipment fails. Logistics must be a headache in the Indian army where they purchase weapons from many different countries although Soviet Union/Russian is the supplier.

Too much reliance on Russian equipment. On the other hand it probably worries China. The sailor that left open the submarine hatch was probably a Muslim.

“ I remember seeing military in the streets with SMLE rifles! Talk about vintage.”

Those were Ishapore Enfields manufactured in the 1960s and chambered for 7.62 NATO. Nice rifles. I picked a couple up back when they were $110 a piece. The bolts are smooth a glass, magazine capacity of 10 rounds, and wicked accurate.

Wish I’d bought a dozen of them.

Part of the problem is India’s incompetence at developing and producing their own weapons systems. For example, the Indians developed their own version of the F-16 like fighter called the Tejas. It took 15 year from prototype to a small batch of front line units. This plane was not some jump in technology but a 4th generation design. The Indians tried to design their own 3rd generation main battle tank, comparable to the T-90 and M1A1, the Arjun. Development started in 1974 and it took 30 years before production.

Yes, they are waiting for that call right now.

They may be ill equipped but they do have over whelming numbers of men. In addition, they also have nukes which may be old but still effective.

I had a nice one I sporterized. Got stolen when I was in California about 1966. If you come across one with serial number 75L8057, it’s mine.

I’ll check but it’s done but it’s doubtful. Mine came direct from a dealer under my C&R. If I’m wrong we will make arrangements.

Best,

Be sure to keep the original patina, and document the provenance!

Sorry, I wasn’t insinuating yours was mine. It’s a number that has stuck in my head all these years and I just throw it out there in jest as a BOLO. However, if it is the same number you are more than welcome to it. It’s in the hands of a Freeper:)

“Sorry, I wasn’t insinuating yours was mine.“

Didn’t believe for a second that you were. LOL. I just checked and it’s not even close. Darn shame to lose such a fine shooter that way. Gun thieves should be horsewhipped in the town square before they serve a lengthy prison sentence.

Best,

L
