How Many Jewish New Years?

Time, in its essence, is an unceasing flow on which human beings have imposed meaning with arbitrary divisions and markers–years, months, weeks, days, minutes, and seconds. These units of time serve as measures for human activity in education, commerce, leisure, agriculture, and religion.

The Exodus readings figure prominently in the Catholic Easter Triduum readings. I got confused over the Exodus reading:

Exodus 12: 1 ADONAI spoke to Moshe and Aharon in the land of Egypt; he said, 2 "You are to begin your calendar with this month; it will be the first month of the year for you.

Rosh Hashana is usually portrayed as the Jewish "New Year". I found this posting.

Nisan is the religious New Year.

Tishrei is the civil New Year. The Jewish New Year begins in the autumn.

The current JY is 5778.
