Baseball has been struggling to speed up the game. The poor fans are freezing (44 degrees) in Detroit and the game is now more than four and a half hours old. A replay just overturned the winning run in the tenth inning.

The game is still on for folks coming home from work. Will it ever end?

Baseball is back. That is the important thing. It is a bona fide sign of spring. But I do not understand why they don’t start the first couple of weeks in Arizona, or Florida. Maybe play in the north in dome stadiums like Toronto.

Just for the sake of comparison, I looked up some old information from the 1950 baseball season.
Opening Day that year was on April 18th.

I bet the game didn’t last 5 hours, either.

I'll bet it wasn't 10-10 after nine innings, either.
You can't speed up a game very much when the teams are scoring 20 runs and they've had nearly 50 runners on base through 13 innings.

Top of the 13th.
Fans getting extra baseball for their money. Not a thing wrong with that either.

I wish they would just leave ‘the game’ alone, and let the boys play.
Baseball is baseball, and those who want something at a faster pace there are other sports to watch/get involved with.

8 less regular season games back then. They should try to start all the games in warmer climates, or domed stadiums. Someone has to be on the road.

A one-hundred-fifty-four game season versus one-hundred-sixty-two, and now three rounds of playoffs versus straight to The World Series then..

Some year, the World Series is going to be snowed out.

They also played a lot of doubleheaders back then. I think MLB teams were averaging more than 12 doubleheaders per season during the 1950s. That’s 12 fewer dates in the schedule on top of the eight fewer dates from the 154-game season.

Over at 6:38pm Eastern—a five hour plus game—Pittsburgh won 13-10.
(Now I wish it would warm up so the snow bank in front on my kennel would melt!)

Yes lots of changes. As far as scheduling goes, the regular season was 24 weeks long at one time when they had a 154 game season. Gradually it was expanded to 26 weeks to accommodate 162 games and far fewer double-headers.
If the season started 2 or 3 weeks later, you would avoid almost all of this early spring bad baseball weather.
To: Alberta's Child
Completely forgot about that, and I was just looking at late 70s Tigers results. They played 6 games I think in 4 days against the Angels one year. 2 doubleheaders.
