A Chinese villager reportedly raised an endangered black bear at home believing it was a dog.

Mr Yang, from southern China's Yunnan Province, claimed he found the animal in the forest in April, 2015, and thought it was an ordinary black puppy, reported Chinese media.

It's said six months later, Mr Yang's father told him the animal, nicknamed Han Han, might be a bear because it started to show bear-like traits.

...

Han Han, around three years old now, weights 88lbs and stands 5ft6in tall. It's a female bear.

The Forest Police of Yongsheng County learnt about the incident after seeing pictures of Mr Yang's bear on social media.

They immediately went to Mr Yang's home for investigation.

The animals was confirmed to be an Asiatic Black Bear, which is a protected animals in China. It's also an endangered animal species widely traded by illegal smugglers in Asia for their body parts.

A statement from the Forest Police of Yongsheng County said officers from the Forestry Bureau of Lijiang went to Mr Yang's home on March 6 to confiscate the bear.

Not sure how you could think it was a dog even as a cub.

I have a picture of me with my arm around that type of bear. It was taken at a zoo in Shanghai. Standing on it’s back legs, he was just taller than my waist. I’m glad it didn’t remember he was a bear at that moment.

They took the dog camping. When they went to Yellowstone,...

...the grizzly bears thought it was their food order being delivered and started arguing about how much to tip the driver.

OK... either the guy’s never seen a dog before or he’s a liar... baby moon bears have big round ears, no tail and no dewclaws...

“” “” A Chinese villager reportedly raised an endangered black bear at home believing it was a dog.”” “”

I suspect keeping endangered wild species at home is highly illegal in China and the whole story is a kind of an idiot defence upon being identified by the authorities.

Or a defense against his neighbors that might want the bear’s $10,000 gall bladder.

After I posted, I wanted to check and see if it was the gal bladder that was prized. It is, but the search also came up with Chinese “farming” the bile from living bears (trying to get it banned as it is so cruel). Perhaps that is what this guy was doing?

“I can see mistaking a young bear for a dog from a distance, but how in hell could anyone continue to confuse one for the other after getting close and actually touching it?”

Aren’t Asians notorious for marrying, and then finding out a year later they married another man?
