“Remove the battery, unplug it, and get a Windows based machine.”

That sounds interesting. Is it fairly simple to do? I can follow instructions pretty well, and have usually avoided Pi stuff, because for some reason I didn’t think it was for the “apple world.”

After many years of using PC and Apple, I am ready to give up on the PC world and go Mac all the way. I use my PC mostly as a station to run the internet through, now that the kids are gone, and just connect to the router with iPad and MacBooks.

Thanks for info.

Windows 8 was where they started to lose me, and I harbour deep resentment towards Windows 10 for all sorts of privacy reasons.

Well, maybe I should just disconnect the battery then. But I really like Free Republic! I lurked for many years before signing up, still pretty quiet, but you guys here feel like friends.

Add uBlock. Use both and it will eliminate most things. Only problem is that on a very few sites you will have to turn them off to view a video, or sometimes, the comments. It’s a small price to pay for having major relief.

Wow...never heard of that angle of attack.....so a router can be configured in this way?

The Pi-hole is a custom DNS server that runs on the Raspberry Pi (or any other random Linux box, I suspect, including Linux running in a VM).

It handles most DNS requests straight. But if the requested host name is on the blacklist of known ad servers, it returns its own LAN IP, causing the adware request to go to a web server running alongside it, which returns an empty page.

To use it, you need to get your machine to use it for DNS. The easiest way to accomplish that is to configure your LAN machines to use your router for DNS (they're probably already set up that way) and then to configure your router to use the Pi-hole as its DNS server. That way, the blacklist is enforced LAN-wide with minimal effort.

You could also leave your router alone and directly configure your machine to use the Pi-hole for DNS.

Ad tech engines are powered by JavaScript. You download a page from wherever, and it in turn loads scripts from one or more ad servers out there. Then it hands control to the scripts, and they proceed to download and display ads that appear to fit whatever they know about you. Thus, first priority on the blacklist should be hosts from which ad tech scripts are downloaded. The page can't run an ad tech engine if it can't download it.

You have to use a raspberry pi. Buy a raspberry pi 3 for best performance. But it can run on any raspberry pi. I have tested it on all types.

You can do this, it is very easy and the instructions are easy. I can help you if you want. But I believe you can do it. You will see a huge significance in web traffic. Pinole has a great forum. I threw them a few bucks to donate to their cause.

This is a great home solution.

I favor Macs but I use PCs too. My home is all Mac based but they too can get hacked by malware but not your typical pc virus attacks.

I paid for and am using Cookie, letting it wipe out dozens/hundreds of cookies and beacons every 3 minutes (have to pause it if using twitter or paypal or banks).

I also set Safari to default to Reader and have Content Blocker default to On, and only let some websites be Off if they wont display otherwise.

I also use the Safari Extension Wiper.

It’s not perfect, but it’s the only ad blocker I found that “does NOT have permission to read or transmit content from websites” [my caps}.
