When I was a kid in the early 50's, I had several friends who had Fathers with cases of grenades at home. They often were used for fishing in Central Florida lakes. We once took one, pulled the pin and dropped it over into a sand quarry. While we had enough sense to make sure we didn't watch it go off, we took off running into the woods after hearing it go off and never repeated the stunt!!

We used M26 hand grenades for fishing in Vietnam. They were referred to as “DuPont Lures.”

One time at Ft Hood while on TDY at the range, we found some 155 arty simultors.

Thought it would be cool to light one off on our desolate country road in front of the house outside copperas cove tx. That thing was about one foot long and maybe 2 inches round, maybe less in diameter. It whistled, then went off, lighting up the night sky like an arc welder.

We spent the next week hiding in the apt, sneaking a peak out the window behind the closed blinds, just knowing the federales were soon coming for us.

Took the rest back to the range and placed them where we found them and never went back.
