I am a huge admirer of G.E.M. Anscombe, who ALWAYS signed herself as "G.E.M. Anscombe" and never wrote using her given name (Elizabeth) or her married name (Mrs. Elizabeth Geech)--- and she was not just the greatest "woman" philosopher, I would say she was the greatest philosopher of the 20th century, period.

So maybe students will get a bigger dosage of Anscombe under this new policy --- but I doubt it. For one thing, she was an uncompromisingly rigorous analytical philosopher. Second, she was a giant of conservative thought. Third (and I suppose it follows) she was no feminist.

G.E.M. Anscombe

Simone Weil, Hannah Arendt, Iris Murdoch ...

People a lot smarter than you or me.

But actually, there is no shortage of philosophers of all colors and genders nowadays.

Whether they're any good is another matter.
