SIERRA VISTA A walk around a wastewater treatment plant might not sound appealing, but allow us to explain it.
The plant formally known as the Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park is a 50-acre wetlands planted with aquatic plants, including cattails, and grasses that attract migrating and nesting birds.
The plant is open for bird walks each Sunday morning. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory and the friends of the San Pedro River.
Tours are restricted to 22 people (including docents) on a first-come, first-served basis.
The walks are held every Sunday starting at 7 a.m. and leave from the viewing platform inside the park.
The entrance is on Highway 90 between mile markers 324 and 325 on the north side of the highway. All tours are free, although donations are accepted.
Dress appropriately for the weather, bring drinking water, wear trail shoes and a hat. For more information, call 520-459-2555 or visit sanpedroriver.org.
For more information about the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory call 520-432-1388 or visit sabo.org.
I’ve taken several guided bird walks at the local zoo in the early morning, before it opens to the public. Best time to see a variety of hawks, and even an eagle or two.
