Find some film clips of U.s. cities up to about 1920. You will be amazed at how many horse drawn wagons, carriages, and horsemen are among the street traffic since cars were only then coming into limited mass production.

Even at the beginning of WWII, the vaunted German armored Panzer divisions were largely shock units with most transportation furnished by horses. And of course everyone still remembers the futile courage of the Polish cavalry charges against them.

Real saturation of private autos in the US didn’t come until after WWII.

I’m more amazed at how men wore coats, ties, and hats when out and about, even at baseball games. And certainly women were more modestly attired.
