Advice on buying a economy Camcorder (novice on specs etc.)
Amazon ^ | Thu, 03/08/18 | daniel1212

Posted on 03/08/2018 5:06:21 PM PST by daniel1212

I am at the point where I am somewhat prayerfully looking a getting should have a camcorder (though I am still without a cell phone which some can be controlled by). But while I have narrowed down the candidates to 5 (plus a Action Camera in case that would be viable). I am looking for one with the best sharp resolution (color quality is not that important) which would be used outsides as well as in, but I have little idea what the specs mean.

I see specs such as 720p, or 1920 x 1080P, or 1920x1080 FHD @15fps, 1280x720 HD, as well as Resolution:6000x4500(24M),5120x3840(20M),4608x3472(16M) plus CMOS: 1.3Mega pixels, max 16.0Mega pixels, or 5.1Mega pixels CMOS sensor(16MP Interpolation), and then 3.0 TFT LCD screen.

I am leaning to the SUNLEA or the LINNSE, while I put the action camera in there since i wondered if that could be used.

I do not want to waste money, and this would be a substantial purchase for such a thing, and so I thought I would ask advice from some FReepers. So below is what i see on Amazon, and thanks for any advice.

Because they are unaware that point-and-shoot cameras these days do video too. You could also ask why anybody buys cameras at all considering most cell phones these days take excellent videos. A while back I bough a couple of older Motorola Moto e cell phones for $15 on eBay and used them as WiFi security cameras. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/turn-your-old-phone-into-a-home-security-camera/

I see that, though I actually have 2 - under 30.00 security cameras, one was sent by the vendor since the first would not work with a PC as it said it would, but it turns out the second would not do so either, forcing the Chinese vendor to admit their software was only for cell phones/smart phones, which I do not need or want another bill for. Enough phone calls already.

With the ease of use, improved picture quality, and relatively low price of today’s cameras I wouldn’t even bother trying to rehabilitate something from any more than a few years ago - would probably cost much more than it was worth.....

Right.

I'm not going to comment too much, it looks like everyone's got you about covered. But,

Well, as far as reviews, if they can be believed, are very high for the models I showed, but the audio is scorned.

If you need better audio, most cameras should have an audio input (XLR or mini-XLR) into which you can plug an external mic. I assume most of your consumer-grade cameras might have an input too. With a 25-50' XLR cable and a small hand mic (like a shure 58) or a wired lapel mic, that will give you better audio than just using the onboard audio.

I’ll bet you; like me; have LOADS of stuff that ought to be transferred to new technology, but have just not gotten around to it.

I am blessed to have built a PC using a ... MEK6800D2.

And when I say built; I mean soldered all the parts onto the circuit board!

Programed it in assembly language with only the manual that showed what commands would do.

'Twas amazing what you can cram into only 256 BYTES of ram!

You mean when you were not posting on the FR RF?

'Twas amazing what you can cram into only 256 BYTES of ram!

Indeed. Apollo Guidance Computer had approximately 64Kbyte of memory and operated at 0.043MHz.

No and yes - when we were married forty-five years ago a mutual-friend gave wife and me a twenty-minute "portrait" of our wedding edited from 8mm film he had taken of the big event - scenes of wife getting ready, the ceremony and reception, and most important all the guests arriving at the church - shots of uncles and aunts and co-workers long gone - one of the most thoughtful and valuable gifts I've ever received.....
Anyhow, inspired by that film I bought an 8mm camera when our daughter was born, and a few years later a Super8 sound camera - later came the videotape rig with the separate recorder that had to be lugged around and eventually an all-in-one camcorder - all the while I was merrily shooting everything that caught my fancy (a bit limited at first by the high cost of 8mm film stock and processing).....
After my mother died I was finally inspired to do something with all this material and set out to do a family memorial - I sent all the 8mm footage to a company which cleaned it up and transferred it to digital video tape, and then loaded those tapes and relevant VHS stuff into the computer using the electronics of a digital camcorder - I got to work learning MovieMaker and eventually edited out about an hour and a-half, two DVD, "project" with material primarily from my side of the family - edited portions of the wedding, the picnic with in-laws in our backyard the day before my father-in-law died, sister's fiftieth birthday, mother's eightieth birthday and on and on - I added some captions including the announcement that it was a "Getahanky Production" and some schmaltzy background music (Romance - The Gadfly) for the first sections without a soundtrack - sent copies out to my sisters and a couple of nieces who were prominent in some of the scenes - it took some time, but well worth it - one sister reported that she did in fact need a hanky while watching it.....
Now I'm faced with finishing a similar film for my wife's side of the family - because we live in the same town as her family, I've got about three times as much footage to go through for them as for my own side - and I need to consult with her lots and lots to see what she wants to include and what she wants to forget about - slow going, but it'll get done - probably.....
So, no and yes......

That’s a real home brew computer! ! ! For the last ten years I built - assembled my own but not on your level. My latest two are from a few years ago using G3220 Pentium with 8gb memory and the other w 16gb memory. Today CPUs are down in price for amazing performances while memory is almost double the price. Motherboard prices are the same. I only assemble my desktops.
