My husband and I lurked here for about a year before we signed up. We only had 1 computer then and we would
sit down together and get in some great discussions, just the
2 of us. Then when all the crap hit the wall with Clinton we
got another computer and joined. He doesn’t hang out here much but I’m here a lot. Get most of my news here. That’s why
I am a monthly contributer AND donate some more during the fund raisers. I wish everybody who hangs out here would do the same so we would be assured of a continuing source of news and entertaining.

It took me awhile to notice that feature too. Probably years.

Maybe it’s because I’m from the DOS days, so typically don’t hover as a habit, especially since FR is generally text. I’ve known about the hover feature in other applications for many years.

Also, unlike nowadays in email where you’d click on a name to reply, the FR reply is to the left of the line after the poster’s name. So if I wanted to reply, my mouse never had much chance to linger over the name.

Going through the article list, I did have occasion to notice that the OP’s name would immediately underline, which was a clue to stop the mouse. You then see the link to their page. This underline bit does not occur where you have article comments, so was a contributor to my not noticing, as the hover text has a delay before appearing.

Plus, the way I generally act with the FR UI is to open a post in a new tab. Thus, my mouse goes to the tab to select it. Reading, I either go to the scroll bar, or simply use the wheel, whereby my cursor is going down the center of the page, never traversing names.

Nevertheless, I did eventually discover the hover through some, possibly random, sequence of events that I cannot fathom.

People used to claim that if you get one of those quick chills and shudder, for no apparent reason, it means someone walked over your grave.

This makes me wonder what effect hovering over a user name has on the individual. Maybe this is why I occasionally feel the need to scratch my ass.

I hope you enjoyed my beating this horse to death.

It took you 12 years to figure that out?

That is more interesting, than what you just noticed.

That feature was great for gauging interest in topics, but also created a little embarrassment for FR, IMO.

That didn't occur to me, but I think you're right; probably my "server bandwidth" assumption was incorrect.

I used to chide the 1998 & earlier posters with the epithet “Noob” until one mistook my sense of humor & ripped me a new one. I spent the next half dozen posts apologizing, explaining, calming & otherwise trying to smooth over things.

You Noobs are funny like that . . .

Chris Matthews was a FReeper, he would probably feel a thrill going up his leg.

That’s basically because our nurse is late with our meds.

God bless you SwatTeam for your support. For all who wish to do the same, you can! Even during this server glitch, the PayPal link and the U.S. Mail are standing by!

When the total views counters went away on the latest news page, so did the hover sign up date on the news page (well, all forums). The hover still works in the articles.

There was a time you could see how many views a thread had.

AND, it was interesting about the view count being so high with certain gender pics! That was when Lazamataz was inundated with guilt determinations! :-)

There was also a time when you had to close your tags, and someone (Laz?) had a shotgun post that would close pretty much any tag.
