Opposition erupts as Iceland eyes banning most circumcisions

Icelandic lawmakers are considering a law that would ban the circumcision of boys for non-medical reasons, making it the first European country to do so.

Some religious leaders in Iceland and across Europe have called the bill an attack on religious freedom. It is seen as a particular threat by Jews and Muslims who traditionally embrace the practice.

Under the proposed law, the circumcision of boys — removing the foreskin of the penis, usually when the child is a newborn — would be viewed as equal to female genital mutilation and punishable by up to six years in prison. […]

Rabbi Avi Feldman of the Chabad Jewish Center, who last month became Iceland’s first permanent rabbi since World War II, says he hopes the bill does not become law. In a statement to the AP, he said circumcision is a core Jewish practice that serves as a bedrock of Jewish life. …

How about banning elective sex change surgeries for minors with unambiguous reproductive organs?

Considering that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is done when families send their 13 year daughters back to the ‘old country’ to visit relatives and get ‘nicked’ as Leftists now call FGB, it’s hard to see how anything would be done here, at least to Muslim who continue the practice.

Until they allow victims of circumcision to sue their church or hospital or parents, that is when change will happen.

Basically, your evidence is a letter to the editor using anecdotal evidence.

Good on Iceland! It's a Barbaric practice, and besides... countries should have the right to decide on religious customs they don't think fit in with their culture.

Not sure why their sovereignty should bother any outsiders.

This is also a sneaky way to deter migrants from staying or wanting to go to Iceland.

Tribal customs from ancient times taking precedent over God’s design?

Did God design the human appendix? Methinks if appendectomies were as easy as circumcisions, none of us would have one.

Those tribal customs had their origin in the observation, probably repeated over centuries, that the human foreskin is liable to ailments that can be prevented by removing the foreskin. Circumcision began as a practical thing and ended up turning into a ritualized custom, after which people forgot the reason it was performed in the first place.

Male circumcision is neither medically required, nor medically harmful when done by trained persons and under clean conditions. Millions and millions of circumcised males can attest to that.

While some religious orders who believe in male circumcision object to secular banning it, the legal argument should not be about “religious freedom”. It is about the personal freedom - regardless of religion - of parents to choose a medical procedure that, while it is an elective procedure, is not harmful to the child.

The legal issue is that the law should not enter into the parents decision to have the circumcision done. They should not need to demand it as a religious right. It’s a personal right, and while some may claim it is “unnecessary”, it is also true that it is not harmful. What ought the law have to do with it? Nothing.

You calling God a liar? It was He who ordered the “tribal custom” in question in Genesis 17. It was a prefiguration of circumcision of the heart, which is first mentioned in Deuteronomy 10. Therefore, He designed the foreskin to be removed but as a physical sign.
