Before during and after the US revolution, the institutions were basically in the same form as those used in England. We still follow substantial parts of that model, see common law. The evolution was in part the form of government (monarchy vs. republic; details of self-governance; articles of confederation -> constitution), but quite (maybe MOST) importantly, to remove the PEOPLE who were given the levers of power.

As beautiful and powerful as our constitution is, it has not prevented the shift of power from the people and states to remote despots. Just one example, our government is enabling and encouraging invasion, just relabel the invaders "dreamers" and all is well. Crikey!
