I have had cars that were old and the rats and squirrels would climb under the hood and chew the wires.
My neighbor had her headlights cut because of the rodents’ affinity for electrical wiring.
Seems they like the ‘feel’ of the insulation on their teeth................
Rat Floss!
I was working at an electronics plant one time when the power went out. Just outside of the building was a power transformer on a concrete pad, with the feed to the plant via underground cable. There was what looked like an animal burrow near the transformer, likely a ground hog. One day we hear this “BOOM”, and the lights went out. I went out to the transformer with some of the other techs, and smoke is coming out of the burrow, and little tufts of ground hog by the entrance. When the cable was replaced, we found the teethmarks on the insulation. Poor groundhog came in contact with 13.5 kV.

I think their teeth continually grow, so they have to chew on something to grind them down. Rats have always chewed on car wiring.

Not a likes to, its a needs to.
Rats, like squirrels and rabbits have teeth that are constantly growing so they chew on things to keep them at the correct size.
Caged rats, squirrels and rabbits will chew on the cages to keep their teeth from over growing.
Dental floss for rodents.
They like the wires because after they are in use and warmed up, their insulation coatings smell good tasting to them, that is why. They think they are edible plant type roots or shoots/vines. Long term parking folks at Denver airport are aware of this problem.
