The U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is one of the largest character development and citizenship programs for youth in the world. The National Defense Act of 1916 established organized JROTC programs at public and private educational institutions. In 1964, Congress expanded the program to all military services and changed from active duty to shared support from the services and schools. As congressionally mandated by Title 10 United States Code, Section 2031, each military service must have a JROTC program to “instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.” JROTC’s mission, “To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens”, is the guide post for the program’s success

Excellent program. And since it’s based on traditional values, respect, and merit - it will be attacked from the left. Probably the best thing going in public education.

4 years NJROTC helped me get my appt to USNA. 4 years on the rifle team, battalion commander...great leadership development, discipline. Won our area inspection my senior year.

One of the best things for our group was that our retired NCO made everyone read out of the books out loud in class. Helped ID who was struggling and then had senior members and instructors latch on and help them to improve. Anyone in there at least a year improved in their reading scores on standard tests.

2 years later my school - which was a satellite shared with the larger county seat school - decided not to stay in it. I attended the meeting in uniform and they refused to allow any public comments. I was furious. There was no better program for teen development at the school. My brothers never got the opportunity. Though one of my nephews did at the county seat school.

Anytime I hear the name of the superintendent or principal from that time - though both are long gone now - I have to spit.

One little known fact - if you complete 3 years of JROTC and you decide to enlist you automatically are enlisted at E-3 instead of E-1. At least that was true when I graduated back in the mid-80s.

Go Navy-Beat Army

Go Navy - Beat Army!

My son is USNA 2013. He is now serving on the USS Carl Vinson, CVN 70, as a nuke on the reactor team. I did a tiger cruise last June on CVN 70 from Pearl to San Diego. Wasn't allowed to see his work space but the rumor on the ship was they had a bowling alley down there.

At his graduation ceremony, obama was the commencement speaker. Even the sky had the good sense to weep, rain, when he was speaking. But as soon as he left, the sun came out and it was a gorgeous day thereafter.

My second ship was the Independence - I was always a topsider (cic officer on a frigate and and asst deck on the carrier). Course I had to qualify in engineering to get my pin.

I want to say we had Dick Cheney for our speaker in ‘89...been so long I can’t remember. I know it wasn’t GHWB.
