1969, he started Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971.

LOL; I expect a lot of musicians wanted to jam with Hendrix.

I had a bootleg of this recording back in the seventies. Basically, it’s just a jam session that doesn’t showcase the virtuosity of eitehr guitarist.

... doesn’t showcase the virtuosity of either guitarist.

Exactly what I thought of Hendrix' performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock ...

This was the time where McLaughlin had recently come to New York. He recorded a record or two with Tony William’s group. One of them is “Emergency” which I have on CD in the car. His playing is raw but much better than in this jam. He also played on Miles Davis’ “Tribute to Jack Johnson” which was the soundtrack for the movies. Again raw but brilliant. In this jam, it sounds like Jimi’s running the show and he pretty much sucks at it. Hendrix and McLaughlin were on two different levels. Had Hendrix lived, there’s a small chance he could have risen to McLaughlin’s level.

I much enjoy McLaughlin’s tribute album to Bill Evans.

I always thought Hendrix was overrated because he did not play long enough and garnered a sympathy vote. I also think he was a breakthrough guitarist that stimulated others. Who's was the best ?

Ask Ozymandias ...

Hendrix was groundbreaking and spawned thousands of wannabees. At the same time, Mike Bloomfield and Peter Green were playing otherworldly lyrical blues that was diametrically opposed to what Jimi was doing. One of my pet guitarist creds is if he ever played with Miles. McLaughlin did and Miles told him he should go form his own band. Hence, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Double neck, acoustic, Gibson fat archtop or various and sundry solid bodies, JM owns the guitar.
