Last night the world was close to a military confrontation between two nuclear powers, Russia and the U.S. In an incredibly dangerous incident in the skies over Syria, an American F-22, which is called a stealth fighter, fired what we now know to be warning flares at our attack aircraft Su-25 at close range.

Does the US have ANY dog in the fight in Syria?

ANY national interest?

Let’s get out (with apologies to John McCain).

We don’t fire “warning flares”.

Correct. THose are called 'countermeasures' and are used to throw off radar or heat-seeking activities INITIATED by the bad guys.

We don’t fire “warning flares”.

Poor translation, we do fire decoy heat signature flares to divert heat seeking missiles, so someone was worried.

I read that firing flares at another plane has a particular name - which of course I have forgotten. Seems to be a tactic perhaps new I don’t know.

It was the SU-25 air cover a SU-34S which dropped down and came up behind the F-22 - with target lock perhaps - it was at that point the 22 skedaddled. I don't know about the 22s, but the Russian planes are armed fro air to air according to an them.

This was part of this weekend’s attack by the Syrian Regime’s coalition (mostly Iranian controlled militias) attack across the Euphrates River, against the Kurdish-led SDF occupying oil fields East of Deir ez Zour.

The US drove off the Russian air cover, and effectively destroyed the attacking force - one of the biggest air attacks since the Raqqa operation.

Russians dead in ‘battle’ in Syria’s east:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5382393/Russians-dead-battle-Syrias-east.html

“Russian citizens died last week in eastern Syria, where a US-led coalition bombed pro-regime fighters to fend off an attack on its local allies, groups representing them said Monday.”

“Buga (leader of a Cossack group serving as mercenaries in Syria) could not explain the exact circumstances of the “battle”, but it happened the same day the US-led coalition killed at least 100 regime and allied fighters in Deir Ezzor province, after positions held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces were attacked by pro-regime fighters.

At the time of the attack, the Russian defence ministry said “there are no Russian servicemen in Deir-Ezzor”.

However, many Russian citizens are fighting in Syria as mercenaries working for a private military company called Wagner, according to numerous reports.”

(Like the “Little Green Men” that the Russians sent into to the Ukraine, to deny accountability for their invasion.)

...”Russian liberal presidential candidate Grigory Yavlinsky on Monday called on President Vladimir Putin to explain why many Russians appear to have died in clashes last week.

“If massive Russian casualties took place, then relevant officials... must announce this to the country and find out who is responsible,” Yavlinsky, who is running on the ticket of the opposition Yabloko party in the March polls, wrote on Facebook.

“I demand to explain why Russian citizens are participating in ground operations in Syria despite declarations by the president and defence minister about the pullout of troops from this country,” he wrote.”

Bottom Line: The US coalition slaughtered the Syrian coalition attackers in a rout (including Russians fighting under unofficial cover as “volunteers”). Russian aircraft and pilots (flying under the official cover of the Russian flag) were spared by being warned off with flybys and flares.
