BEIJING — China has waded into a growing political crisis involving the small island nation of Maldives, urging the international community to play what it calls a "constructive role" in the ongoing dispute, putting itself at odds with the United Nations on the issue.

The Maldives, which is known more for its luxury resorts, has become an increasingly important part of China's global trade and infrastructure project, the "Belt and Road" initiative. It is also seen by analysts as a key strategic outpost in the Indian Ocean, despite its close proximity to India.

Earlier this month, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency and ordered the arrest of Supreme Court judges and opposition politicians, a move that critics argue is aimed at silencing opponents of the current administration ahead of elections later this year.

China opened its first overseas military base, or as it calls them "logistic hub," in Djibouti last year and there have been credible reports, analysts note, that more are on the way. According to reports, a base is under serious consideration near Gwadar Port in Pakistan, and another along the east coast of Africa, notes David Brewster, a senior analyst with the National Security College at Australian National University.

A bad day is coming in the future between and America and the ChiComs.

And I fear it will get all sorts of out of control.

VERY THANKFUL that A bombs saved half a million American soldiers’ lives

Not so thrilled that there are thousands upon thousands of them out there now.

Though they likely were the reason a war or two was averted.

What sick irony.

As I see it, there are three options here. I vote for option #3.

1. Take the path of least resistance, and concede that the eastern Pacific will inevitably become a Chinese sea. Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc. will just have to suck it up.

2. Increase US forces in the region. Be ready to stare down the Chinese tiger.

3. Unleash Japan. And give them all the technical support they need (yep, including nukes). But it’s their part of the world. They must take the lead.

Ugh! In my post #6, it should read "concede that the western Pacific will inevitably become a Chinese sea."

I don't think even the most ambitious Chinese leaders are thinking about taking the eastern Pacific (not now, anyway).

I like it.

Lord knows they know how to wreak havoc when they want.

Let Japan take care of this mess. They’ll design some awesome military weapons too.

I think the threat of them attacking Pearl again are slim.l

Plus we could get our troops out of there

And it’s too late. You said EASTERN first and now you have to be kicked off the board :)

But being as I should have been kicked off 1000 times and I’m still here, we’ll let it slide :)

The Maldives [...] is also seen by analysts as a key strategic outpost in the Indian Ocean, despite because of its close proximity to India.

There, fixed it!

Seriously: Who writes this stuff?!

What does China need a base in Djibouti for?
